Who knew that paying $5.99 for a Haruhi single would be so worth it?
When I saw the Master Keaton DVD 1 on Deal of the Day for $0, it seemed to good to pass up (what I'd wind up paying was shipping on it, at about $3). So since extra item ship at $1 more, I reasoned that I might as well throw a few things on the order, which got me to order one of the Haruhi singles for $5.99 (still overpriced though for 3 tracks).
So how was I to know that 2 songs (I really don't like "Koi no Mikuru Densetsu", which was the op for the episode 0 of Haruhi) would significant entertainment for most of the weekend so far? Not I. Granted, my feeling is that the "A" side ("God Knows...") is stronger than the "B" side ("Lost My Music"), but the latter is pretty decent (it's just that "God Knows..." is much more likely to get stuck in my head).
At 12:18 for the disc, and paying $5.99 for it, that's still about $2.00/track, or about 49 cents/minute, which really isn't particularly good as music goes (it's better than if I had imported it, which you more or less have to do for a lot of OST's these days, or wind up buying what you would reasonably conclude is a bootleg copy), but I think it's paid for itself thus far. Now if they would just release a real OST for the show, that might be nice, instead of about a dozen character song singles.
In other news, Tokyopop's rerelease of Aria 2 hits the streets on Tuesday (volumes 1-3 were originally released by ADV), which I'm certainly looking forward to.

Well, it's time
Today the second volume of Twelve Kingdoms, Sea of Wind, has its street date (it's $11.55 at Amazon, $12.74 at Right Stuf, and $13.59 at Barnes & Noble (online), with a $16.99 MSRP). My copy is scheduled to arrive Friday, but based on the way things have played out before, it may get here Thursday if I'm lucky.
I have a feeling though that some people will be disappointed at the turn in the story; the second book is about Taiki (referred to in passing in book 1) instead of Yoko. And while I too am eagerly anticipating this volume, I do want to be careful not to be too eager--while book 1 was very good, the story had some pacing and unevenness issues.
I don't know yet when (or if...*sighs*) volume 3 comes out; Tokyopop isn't listing all of their dates for a series liked they used to on their old site, but as I recall it was planned for next March at about the same time. At the same time, I have to be concerned that it will never come out given Tokyopop's issues with certain other novels (I still have a 1 year old Kino no tabi volume 2 preorder [it's older than my niece!] sitting at Right Stuf). But this series is probably the last best hope for Tokyopop's novel franchise--if it goes bust, it's probably curtains for that venture.

Good news...
It appears that the paperback Junni Kokki volume 1 successfully hit the street for its February 12 release date last week. Given my poor luck with some of Tokyopop's novel releases, this seems to be the last good omen remaining for the March 11 street date of the hardcover volume 2.
Now if only the series that's dead and the other that's dying would have releases....

Twelve Kingdoms - Sea of Wind!
The link on the righthand bar for Junni Kokki novel 2 is now active on the Tokyopop site. The cover is similar to volume 1, but has Taiki (I think?) on the cover instead of Yoko. The street date is March 11, and it was solicited in the December Diamond Previews (see DEC07 3895) for a February ship date.
With just about two months to go to street date, and given this new sign (the paperback version of the first novel has a street date in February too), it's almost certainly a done deal. And while Tokyopop has done this before (compare this page to an earlier post), this is just about a done deal.

End of Scrapped Princess novels?
A poster on ANN's message board indicated that he received an email from Tokyopop's director of marketing, who indicated that Tokyopop has not licensed any further novels from the Scrapped Princess novels, and thus they won't be releasing any more. The fourth novel had a street date as recent as last June, but it gradually got pushed back until August (maybe July?), and then was missed completely, with limited official word except that there were licensing issues that could not be commented on.
I could be positive and hope that they will be releasing #4 at some point (#3 was released in April, so it hasn't been that long a gap). And this past weekend, a Tokyopop rep said that it might be shelved indefinitely, but wasn't actually sure. But should this email be authentic, this would practically put the nail in the coffin. Sure it might be possible for someone else to release the remaining novels (I think the planned adaption had nine more novels), but without having the first three, it would likely make other companies lukewarm to the prospect. Not to mention the fact that this has "not selling well" written all over it.
Meanwhile, the second Kino no tabi novel has been in limbo for nearly a year now (it had a January release date pushed back). Right now it has a street date of February 2008, but the word is that that date has little chance. It too had a licensing issue, but as I recall (I don't have the quote anymore), they were a little more effusive in their praise and wanting to publish #2. However, I've seen indications that this issue might not be an issue with it not selling well, which may be harder to resolve.
A little positive news though: it seems like the second Twelve Kingdoms novel is on schedule for its March release (hardback), and the paperback version of volume 1 will come out in February. A year certainly seems like a long time between releases, but Tokyopop seems to think it's necessary.

How many people...
..would defend keeping a cat on a warship by using a five graph set of probable fatality rates?
The cat of course is this officer's cat, but rather someone else's. And no, she didn't defend it by using the story of the man who jumped into the thorns--it seemed like a good idea at the time!
If you really want to lower your fatality rates, you have to get Buyo from Inuyasha (he's practically indestructible) (picture forthcoming).

Crepuscular rays?
This wasn't really discussed in my atmospheric physics class, but this is (in my opinion) a fairly beautiful drawing of crepuscular rays (at least, that's my feeling). The rays themselves are a little incomplete (that's my feeling from personal observation), but the color and balance of the picture is quite excellent. Notice the use of the sunset in the distance and the intermediate obstructions--either someone has seen this before personally or with a photograph to draw this scene, or they have excellent skills. SutePri #4 Delayed!
Tokyopop's pushed back to the release date of SutePri Volume 4 to August 10 (from July 10). Volume 5 is slated to be released on October 9...although I'm not sure that's going to hold up.

You don't MESS with the saleryman, Soopy-kun!
So there's this series with only one episode subbed (it's about 3 or 4 years old now) that Soopy-kun showed me last night, and he was telling me about it via AIM. He then was pasting the conversation into an open AIM window to send to his roommate, but accidentally pasted it into a live IRC window. He was subsequently banned.
The moral of the story:
You don't mess with the saleryman! (link forthcoming)

Three Items
1. Bleach 16 came out last night; it was so cool. Lots of blood spattering though and probably lots more in 17.
2. Yakitate 10 CAME OUT TONIGHT! Soopy-kun will be so upset when I watch it without him, but can I resist?
3. If you're following that little weather system this weekend, it ain't little anymore. 1" here near RAH, 1-3" out near IGX, ice, sleet...I thought we had enough last week!

to all da dreamers
now everybody move... can't get a little something got to do... so better believe in... better believe in yourself...
-yakitate! japan 2nd closing theme
i've been listening to it for 2 days straight, first because of a lack of babystars and then because i started to really like it. and the band, has two of the blackest japanese people i've ever seen in it. but their music kicks ass so they can dress in sailor moon costumes for all i care
so, i met weather boy's friend weather dude the other day, a very cool guy. weather boy told me he's determined to grow a beard now to gain the coolness required to surpass weather dude and reach the ultimate transformation: weather shaman... being the lazy person that he is, i think he's going to stop after unleashing the 2nd level seal and settle for disheveled weather professional.
also, one of weather boy's friends in chapel hill said ksssssss!! after realizing that i applied kenshin lingo to things weather boy would say in real life, that they did... what in the name of the weather gods is ksss?!
and bleach 14 came out today... weather boy will die if he watches it without me and spoony.
